We might not all be there yet, but it’s likely you know someone who is. And let’s face it, we’ll all be there at some point, so let’s talk about the inevitable.

It’s not all about the hot flushes (although they’re not very nice to encounter either). Menopause causes many changes to your skin. Your body stops making as much collagen, you lose fat under your skin and elasticity drops. Combined with dryness caused by hormonal changes, skin starts to sag, especially around the neck, jawline, and cheeks which then causes fine lines and wrinkles.

All these changes not only make women uncomfortable but can also cause a loss of confidence and anxiety about daily routines. So what are some ways to help? Here’s our brief guide to menopausal symptoms and some tips for counteracting them.

Symptoms of Menopause

There are more than 30 recognised symptoms of menopause, and every woman will experience them differently. In other words, there is no rule book for menopause, even though most women probably wish there was! There is one certainty: almost all women (8 out of 10) at some stage in their 40s and/or 50s will experience at least some menopausal symptoms and associated physical changes. It’s the timing and intensity that varies.

The most common – and talked about – symptoms of menopause are hot flushes, night sweats and irregular periods. Other symptoms include:

  • skin becomes drier and thinner
  • insomnia
  • dryness and tone changes in feminine areas
  • fluctuating moods and anxiety
  • weight gain
  • muscle aches and pains
  • headaches and migraines
  • brain fog

Caring for Your Skin in Menopause

One of the best ways to look after your skin during all stages of menopause is with a customised skincare routine. Why? Because your routine should reflect your specific skin care concern. Increased dryness is one of the most prevalent worries, although sensitivity, redness and slackness are also common problems. Talking to your beauty therapist about your skin is the best way to find out what treatments and products will help counteract the effects of menopause on the skin. Our other top tips include:

  • increase your water intake
  • cool packs
  • aromatics to help aid in sleep routines
  • massage to help aid in lost rest
  • diet and exercise to help regulate hormones
