With everything that has happened in 2020, most of us are looking forward to the end of the year, and the start of what will hopefully be a much brighter 2021. While Christmas this year will be unlike any other, there is plenty of optimism around that it will be as ‘normal’ as it can be during a pandemic. With that in mind, it’s time to start thinking about Christmas shopping, especially if you’re one of those people who always leave their shopping to the last minute. With COVID-19 wreaking havoc on supply chains and small business, the message in 2020 is clear: #shopearly and #shoplocal.

Shop Early

Shopping early this year is essential. Postage delays, social distancing, international freight challenges and the uncertainty of the pandemic have the potential to disrupt Christmas shopping at any time. The Australian Publishing Association (APA) and The Australian Booksellers Association (ABA) is encouraging shoppers to purchase books in November to ensure they don’t miss out. Freight delays and printing backlogs mean that once a title sells out, it is unlikely to be back in stock in time for Christmas.

If you want to make sure no one in your circle misses out on a present, the message is clear: shop early to avoid disappointment.

And there’s also the social distancing requirements for shops, so expect everything to take a little bit longer this year.

Shop Local

Lockdowns have devastated many local businesses across Australia, so now is the perfect time to get out and support them. Purchasing your Christmas gifts locally not only boosts the local economy but helps the community come together after what has been a tumultuous year. Behind every small business is a person who lives and works in your community, someone who employs local people and purchases products and services from independently-owned businesses. Shopping local helps build relationships between members of the community – you are more than just another customer and will benefit from a truly personalised shopping experience.

Most businesses are open to customers, but if you are unable to visit in person, check to see if they have a delivery option. Purchasing a gift voucher is another way you can support local businesses and they can easily be posted too.
